Barbara Taylor attended Rice University, where she earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Biology and Psychology, and graduated cum laude. She then attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine for her Medical Degree, followed by a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the same institution.
In 1989, Dr. Taylor began her private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology. From the very beginning, she developed a niche practice specializing in interested patients who wanted to understand and participate in their healthcare choices and decisions. In the Texas Medical Center, where dozens of Ob/Gyns practiced, she had the reputation as being the doctor who devoted extensive amounts of time to her patients, delivered information in a manner they could understand, and carefully matched management options to each patient’s unique needs and desires.
Barbara is an eternal student, who says that the more she learns, the more she realizes how little she knows. In 1995, she entered a Master’s of Business Administration program at the University of Houston. She did this part time, attending classes on the weekends, while carrying on her full time Ob/Gyn practice. She accomplished the majority of her studying while standing by for deliveries. She completed the M.B.A. in 1997, graduating summa cum laude. As the M.B.A. program neared its end, Dr. Taylor decided to continue graduate studies, and enrolled in law school at the University of Houston Law Center. She attended classes on weekday evenings for four years, while continuing her full time practice. She concentrated heavily on health law, and graduated in 2001 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. She pursued these degrees in other disciplines simply because she enjoys learning.
In the fall of 2000, Dr. Taylor was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis. It began to interfere with her ability to perform the intricate gynecologic surgery necessary for her practice. As a result, in 2001 she sold her practice to take a hiatus, and contribute in a different manner.
During that hiatus, she traveled widely, found and married her soul mate, and now seeks to serve women’s health in a more significant way. A baby boomer herself, she was born in 1959, and she's been menopausal since 1994 at the age of 34. As an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, she has first-hand experience working with a wide variety of women before, during, and beyond the menopausal transition.
Dr. Taylor reflected on the fact that, during her years in practice, women repeatedly expressed sentiments indicating that adequate, simple, unbiased information on menopause was not readily available. Dr. Taylor listened to the concerns of menopausal women and their partners, and decided to do something to serve their needs. So, she wrote the book and developed the seminars to give them exactly what they requested.
Her book, "Menopause: Your Management Your Way ... Now and for the Rest of Your Life" is the result of Dr. Taylor's desire to continue educating women and delivering information in her easy-to-understand manner. In addition to the book, she gives seminars that derive from the book. The seminars are fun, informative, empowering, and unique.
Unlike most menopause resources, she doesn’t tell her readers and seminar participants how she manages her own menopause, and she doesn’t support any one management option over all the others. Her book and seminars cover diet and lifestyle, vitamin and mineral, herbal and botanical, hormonal, and non-hormonal medications as management options. The seminar is a 12-hour, multi-part presentation, with flexible scheduling. She hosts the seminars in her own home, and invites her participants to set the dates. The comfortable, intimate, home environment is ideal for her seminars. Both the book and the seminar include a worksheet on which each woman individualizes her circumstances, risks, and preferences. It allows them to tailor their health and manage their menopause their way.
Because medical education excluded alternative and complementary medicine, Dr. Taylor pursued such courses on her own accord. She feels that, as a service provider, she has a duty to her readers and seminar participants to offer education and guidance on all available options for menopause. She's also searched the health food stores and vitamin shops for menopause products. On multiple occasions, she's purchased one of every product on the shelf. Dr. Taylor just wants to be familiar with all of the available options. And, yes, as a menopausal woman herself, she's tried most of the products personally.
Dr. Taylor believes that, by the time women reach middle age, they know themselves better than anyone else does. She helps them make choices which suit their individual interests. She takes great delight in doing so, and is passionate about satisfying the needs of her readers and seminar participants. They benefit greatly from her ability to translate medical lingo into lay terminology and explain things in a manner they can understand and utilize.
You can be sure that Dr. Taylor stays abreast of the medical literature on menopause and women’s health issues. Her medical license, board certification, and professional corporation are all current.
Dr. Taylor empowers her readers and seminar participants to understand what menopause entails. She gives them the tools to choose the best management options for their physical, mental, and emotional circumstances. As a result, they are prepared for life during the menopausal transition and beyond. They value the knowledge and appreciate the opportunity to make the choices they deem most suitable for their unique needs and preferences. They also welcome the notion that they can change their minds or adjust their regimens as necessary. None of her readers or seminar participants prefer to remain ignorant or submit to a standard regimen designed for the “average woman.” Why? Because not one of them views herself as "the average woman." Nor should you! We're all unique. Dr. Taylor honors and supports each woman as a one-of-a-kind individual.
Because of their ability to make personal choices, Dr. Taylor's readers and seminar participants feel empowered; they embrace the changes associated with menopause in a healthy and productive manner. They perceive menopause as a time to thrive rather than a time to succumb to the discomforts of menopause and aging. Dr. Taylor believes that all women deserve the same opportunity. Her book and seminars make that possible.
